WINTER MAINTENANCE UPDATE 5

Overnight
Yesterday afternoon there were outbreaks of sleet and snow giving accumulations. There were then further outbreaks of sleet and snow during the first half of the night giving further accumulations, particularly over the coastal strip (some 3″). . The sleet and snow then cleared away after midnight to leave it largely dry, although there were a few snow flurries in the west between 0500 and 0700. Road surface temperatures (RSTs) well below zero with icy conditions.

General Synopsis
Heavy sleet and snow will spread south across the county this afternoon with several cms accumulating rapidly between 2 and 6pm. The snow will clear away southwards between 6 and 8pm, leaving lengthy clear spells and just well scattered snow showers overnight. RSTs well below zero with widespread ice.
Snow Summary
From this afternoons snow 1-3cm expected on the coast where it may start as sleety rain before turning to snow. 2-5cm on low ground inland. 4-8cm in Pennine areas. An additional local 1cm almost anywhere from any well scattered snow showers overnight, although these most likely by the coast.
Proposed Actions
Shifts have again been extended for another 24hrs till 1.00pm tomorrow 3rd Jan to deal with the expected snow this evening and overnight showers
