Below is the latest update form the Council on flooding. Continue to take care. Any problems get in touch.
As expected, the wet weather continued overnight and conditions in many parts of the county have deteriorated. However the weather warning has now been lifted and we are expecting the weather to improve during the day. That said there is still a significant amount of water about and flood warnings are still in force across the region.
As at 9am this morning, the following roads were affected:
| Roads closed
Roads affected by flooding
|
The only school we are aware is closed is Sunnybrow Primary School. A number of other buildings have been affected including Chester le Street Civic Centre which has suffered a power outage.
We received over 5,000 calls to the Council yesterday including 1200 for highways and streetscene, 900 to the switchboard and 700 general enquiries. The council had 50 calls to the contact centre between 5.30pm and 10.30pm yesterday and then 33 during the night which were responded to including providing the Honest Lawyer at Croxdale with 200 sandbags (there was a live news feature from here for ITV this morning, in addition Durham being covered in most national updates).
All spent sandbags will be left in place today as a precautionary measure and teams are now out and about helping to clear up where they can.
The rail network is also still affected particularly between Durham and Darlington.
The road closures and traffic congestion may mean that in some areas the refuse and recycling collection may be disrupted or later than usual, however we have a full deployment of crews, and are working hard to keep this to a minimum.
As before, for highways issues, including surface water flooding on the roads, blocked drains in the highway etc, people should call the Highways Action Line on 0191 370 6000.
For sandbag requests where properties are at risk of flooding, people should also call 03000 261000.
For emergencies, where properties have been flooded and lives are at risk, people should call the emergency services on 999.
We will of course keep you up to date if any more significant incidents occur.
