CLIMATE CHANGE MARKET IN DURHAM

Press release below from the county council relating to a climate change market. This strikes me as an excellent idea and I would urge any residents who can get down for this on Saturday to do so.  I have asked the Council if they would consider having someone on hand to give specific details of ways to save money on energy bills at the same event and on the new recycling regime.

County Durham residents are being invited to attend a street market with a difference, as part of a national campaign to raise awareness on the issue of climate change.

As part of Durham County Council’s continuing efforts to reduce carbon emissions in the county and to mark national ‘Climate Week’, the public will be offered free advice on how they can make micro renewable technologies work for them. The event will be held in Durham Market Place on Saturday March 17, between 9.30am and 4.00pm.

Senior sustainability strategy officer, Stephen McDonald, explains: “This event is part of our on going commitment to help residents reduce their carbon footprint. On hand will be various local companies who provide micro renewable energy advice and installation for individuals, communities and businesses.

“Climate Week aims to highlight the many positive steps already being taken across Britain. Through highlighting real, practical examples, it is hoped residents will be inspired to reduce their own carbon emissions.”

Cabinet member for regeneration and economic development, Cllr Neil Foster, is a keen supporter of the initiative: “If each person does their bit in the battle against climate change, no matter how small the changes made are, we can make a big difference.

“Visitors will be able to see the technologies and talk to the installers themselves to get an idea of how renewable energy technologies could benefit them. I think it’s a great idea.

“Come along and put the professionals through their paces. You’ll be able to learn about how the systems work, how appropriate they are for you, the costs, the savings, planning issues and technical issues direct from the installers themselves.”

Visitors to the market will have the opportunity to quiz the installers about their products including:

  • Solar
  • Wood Heating
  • LED Lighting
  • Heat Pumps
  • Wind
  • Flood Protection

The council has signed the ‘Covenant of Mayors’ and has a commitment to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 40 per cent by 2020 and micro renewable energy technologies will play an important role in helping to achieve this target, helping also to reduce our reliance on imports of oil and gas.
